I see this a lot at the periphery (and only at the periphery) of, for example, the environmental movement, as many people whose sympathies run toward environmental protection find themselves unable to actively oppose ecological degradation, in great measure because their sense of self-loathing at being part of the industrial culture that’s destroying the planet paralyze them. The same dynamic tricks out in race, class, or gender issues, too, whenever people personalize their problem. Because they own a car, it becomes their fault the climate is changing. Because they live in a house or apartment (or a yurt, for that matter), they’re somehow primarily culpable for deforestation, as culpable, I’ve heard them say, as even the CEO of Weyerhaeuser. They need, they say, to eradicate their own hatred or anger before they can act. They need, themselves, to be pure in thought, action, emotion, before they can begin to do anything constructive. Of course this is silly, and of course they never get around to doing anything at all. They hang paralyzed at the edge of constructive action for years, never quite falling back into dissonance, but never moving on.

Hey there, Tate Polio -
Just a quick farewell before you adios.
I have loved knowing (not in the Biblical sense) you over the last couple of years & I hope we are able to continue our friendship in the States... or on a sunny beach in Mexico with a cold beer & hot tamale. (Basically, Cory & I like you & sincerely hope that you like us too, which would greatly increase our chances of meeting up in the future.)
I like you because you write nice letters to The Namibian, you are famous in 'Faces & Places', you say I'm pretty, you are so kind to your friends and an ass to everyone else, you take nice photos, you tell the truth, you have a great vocabulary & good hair, and you're pretty funny, too.
Bye bye, love.

Write a response to the following letter that was written to a magazine asking for advice:
I am 15-years-old and I have a problem and I don’t know who else to turn to. I have been going with a girl for six months. Now she tells me she is ready for sex. I told her that I wasn’t but now she says I don’t love her. She said she will find another boy if we don’t have sex. She says everyone is doing it. I do love her and I don’t want to lose her. What should I do?
Signed, Confused

When you sleep with it push your pines in the vagina’s monkey and tell that monkey to dance. After having sex with amonkey go back to your girls friend and say that I want to have sex with you now. Your girl friend will not agree with you and she will Just said that no we will not have sex now but we will have sex when I am 13 years old that is what you need to do to solve your problem.

On July 9 2006 at about 22h45 I went home in a blue Toyota Corolla taxi (the model just before the new one, I think it came out in 1996). Unfortunately I did not get a chance to see the number plate. We were going along Claudius Kanduvasu Street. At Abraham Mashego Street we turned left heading towards Khomasdal. There the driver accelerated to the point that he overtook two taxis on the speed bump and on the right bend the taxi went over the kerb. At this point the car was actually sliding between the last taxi he overtook and a third one.
I was sitting on the right rear seat and when this happened my head was centimetres away from the rear left door. I asked him to slow down and he said that was the way he drove. Then I asked him to stop the taxi since I felt my life was in danger. He refused. I then took out my 9 mm pistol, loaded it so that he heard that I was armed. He then had a lot to say, but I noticed that he slowed down to 60 km/h. Later he apologised. The question is, did he apologise because he put my life in danger, or because I was armed at the time?
Concerned,
Windhoek
Hypocrisy
Norms are based neither on nature not on reason, but on passion. Virtues are tricks to satisfy our selfishness. Under the guise of propriety, we sail round the rocks barring the satisfaction of our self-liking. Hypocrisy dogs pride like a shadow. Quite often our cant is not deliberate. Selfishness lurks behind even sincere altruism. Every man deceives himself. Reason, too, is unwittingly guided by passion; all thought is a rationalization of desire. In the end, we even learn to look on egoism as something sinful. For that very reason, the revelation that self-conceit lies at the heart of society is felt as an affront to our self-conceit.
Stupidity reigns where all seems self-evident. We are blind to the role of pride and to its camouflage. Intelligence cannot tear the veil away: pride blinds even the most sensible man to pride.
Stupidity as the Basis of Civilization
Stupidity is unwitting self-destruction, the ability to act against one’s best interests, with death as the extreme result. This talent is typically human. To begin with, man is the only species stupid enough to attract the attention of wild animals by the cries he utters at birth. In addition, man comes into the world a livid purple so that he lacks the protective colouring needed to vanish in the undergrowth. Moreover, man is one of the few mammals unable to walk at birth.
Worst still, while animals have retained an instinct for self-preservation, man is capable of risking his own survival and that of his species on a whim. For the sake of delusions concerning race, nation, sex or religion, we are prepared to sacrifices ourselves and our fellow men.
On the one hand stupidity poses a daily threat to civilization; on the other it constitutes the mystical foundation of our existence. For if man was not to fall victim to his own stupidity, he had to develop his intelligence. All the strategies aimed at controlling our stupidity combine to form our civilization. Culture is a time- and place-conditioned product of a series of more or less abortive attempts to come to grips with the self-destructive folly found in all countries and at all times.
Second Nature
Habit frees us from the necessity of having to think about everything. Without a fixed frame of reference we should have to constantly reconsider the fluctuating situations in which we find ourselves. The rituals of propriety, which regulate our social relations, relieve us of worries about mutual tensions and allow us to concentrate on the conversation. And we can only speak spontaneously by blindly observing the grammatical rules. Rhetoric abounds in platitudes for channeling our thoughts, which cannot develop if the rules of logic have become second nature.
As soon as we become aware of automatisms, our thoughts cease to range freely. The pianist stumbles over the keys if he thinks about the fingering. The walker loses his balance if he pays attention to the rhythm of his steps. Dumb habit is no obstacle to free development. Enlightened thought does not prove its worth in the fight against routine; rules have a liberating effect as long as we follow them unthinkingly.
Our intellectual creativity can only flourish within conceptual limitations. The spirit thrives by grace of the dead letter, on condition that we ignore this fact. Stupidity, in short, is a prerequisite for intellectual growth.
