Whiner

My favorite holiday ever is Wine Buffet, which is better than Jesus Buffet because homeboy was only born on 0.2% of a year's days, whereas Wine Buffet is whenever I want it to be as long as I woke up earlier that day to go to work.

Wine Buffet is this ancient Josean tradition where you give some fancy pants restaurant $25 and they let you drink as much not-bad-for-Korea wine as you can in four hours, along with food that passes for an actual dinner. I generally try to go the Friday after payday (any Friday, really), but that was last Thursday and I still haven't noticed any new deposits in my account. That might have ruled out a trip tomorrow were I anyone else but hahahahahahahahahahaha, savings. I'm going tomorrow and maybe the next day too just because I can.

But wine whine blah blah why'n. Making plans with friends to go tomorrow has caused me to reflect back on the seminal moments of my life related to wine. Chronological order:

Franzia - My sister and I would be thirsty on occasion and, being youngins, would root through the fridge looking for something sweet. Our choices were cheap beer, cheap tequila and, uh, cheap? Franzia. Had we been 12 yet - the age when everyone in Eugene begins furiously drinking - we wouldn't have begged money off one of our mum's loser boyfriends for generic Cokes at the convenie since we could have had our sugar rush that way.

Mad Dog 20/20 - Friday night halfway through freshman year and I was looking for something - ANYTHING - with a name other than 5 o'clock. Bottles with make-believe Russian names were no va as well. Saw some Ypsi hobo propped up against a wall, asked what he was drinking, found out it only cost a dollar, and then bought two. Only finished one, and that's because I took three drinks before dumping the rest out.

Haha, joking. That was actually my second go with the Mad Dog. The real first time was during orientation when I somehow ended up in this girl's room with a bottle of strawberry banana 20/20 hooch. I didn't want to drink it so she called me a pussy because that's something you say in Michigan even though she was from Ohio. Not sure if I finished the bottle but am sure we ended up together on a plane to Paris two years later. (I just googled her: she's a middle school principal?)

Mary Louise and her seven sisters Mary - Hmm, it's only now that I'm writing this do I realize this girl I met in my sophomore poetry class looked a lot like the purtier half of Sasha. Sasha, though, is an only child, whereas my poetry friend had seven sisters, all named Mary. She was also named Mary, so I won't bother telling you this story has an ending. But before the ending she came over to my dorm one Sunday night because I'd promised to cook her dinner. Jeonsa as I was and still am, I bought a half-pound of chicken - on sale! - and gave my friend $5 to buy a bottle of red wine to...use for cooking? There was still enough left for us to drink out of coffee cups, but after graciously picking through the kidney-looking thing on her plate she excused herself to go watch the second half of the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl really was on, so it's not like she was giving me some half-assed excuse about washing her hair or something. And we didn't really see each other afterward. But the Super Bowl really was on, and she probably went home to watch it, so cool on me.

Bacharach, Germany - After finishing university I moved to Europe for like a month. I didn't have a home but I did have a Eurail pass, which meant I was a real European because I rode the train everywhere as well as lived in Europe, out of a backpack. One night I found myself staying in this luxurious castle...

...that was really just a youth hostel. Was going to order a beer at the hostel bar but in a fit of banal poetry had a wine instead because "I was born 20 miles from here, dammit!" JFC I hate myself sometimes. But I did love that glass of wine - mostly because it wasn't hooch - and decided I should drink more of it when I moved back stateside. Stupid azz return flights.

Main Street Party Store in Ann Arbor, Michigan - Ja, this place. Something nice was always on sale for ~$10, so I'd buy it, ride my bike home, read some third-hand book on wine, and spend four glasses trying to figure out the flavors and all that other boutique fluff that goes with proper stemware. My dear friends Kristi and Nate - Parents! - were also getting into wine at the time so sometimes we got sloshed I mean worked out proper pairings together. Think we were all getting pretty decent but then I went to Africa and started drinking something so offensive you had to mix it with Coke and call it punyapunya. Now I drink whatever you put in front of me, though not before swirling it around and pretending like I know how to pronounce sommelier.

While in Africa I hitchhiked down to Cape Town to meet up with Nate and Kristi. From there we putted around Stellenbosch, which looks like this:

I mean this:

I bought like two bottles of wine and Nate and Kristi bought 400. I think they still had some bottles left when I was visiting for Christmas three years later.

Oregon wineries - One summer in between classes I moved back to Eugene to hang out with my brother. My sister and her boyfriend flew out for a visit and we went driving through Lorane Valley doing wine tastings. Around the third stop my sister and I looked at our brother and asked if he could drive. He was 10.

Last summer we were together in Oregon again and right back at the wineries. Our brother wasn't with us for this tour but were he we would have looked at him just the same and asked if he could drive. This time his excuse would have been no driver's license even though he's 19 now.

3 North Vines - Kristi and Nate have drunk so much wine they eventually figured out it would be much cheaper to just start their own winery instead of continuing to buy whatever's on sale at the Kroger. Here's what their spot looks like if you're a bald eagle who loves freedom:

And what it looks like if you're the same bald eagle waking up at 9.00 am the morning after a few too many wines.

Okay, that's enough blah blah sorry you're so bored blah. I'm going to have a whiskey now.

The Mexican Word for Jeonsa

Look at Obama being all jeonsa:

You know who enabled the best response EVAR? The Repubz. Srsly, what a bunch of dick stoppers, for all the standard reasons and more. If any of them were even mildly decent human beings then Obama would be on Mexican television speaking boilerplate instead of going all, Puta, puh-leeeeaze! But since every white guy in government up and drove his family doublewide east to Crazy Town, Obama's done figured he can, hypothetically speaking, drop bombs all over Libya and if anyone protests just be, Whuh, you're going to vote for those inbreds instead? Hahahahahahahahahaha.

So ja, what sport is that guy playing? Basketball? Good, put him down for yet another home run.

Defacaffeinated

I've been waking my azz up the last week or so with some weasel coffee. What's weasel coffee, you ask? The best thing ever.

Apparently the only thing with a more discerning taste in coffee than a hybrid Pdx-Seattle hipster is a Vietnamese weasel. Don't know why: they spend so much time snobbing out over the choicest beans and turns out they can't even digest them. They instead leave a big ol' dooder that some underpaid day laborer has to pick through because the weasel's stomach enzymes turn the beans into something more aromatic and less bitter than the can of Folgers my mum usually buys. I'd call the cups I've brewed for myself velvety with hints of lingering chocolate overtones, but only because I just strung a few words together like anyone else who's ever described a cup of coffee that tasted like coffee. But better than anything I've had the last 1.5 years even though the coffee I bought was run through a synthetic digestive track and not an actual weasel. Belee dat, since it's not like I have $350 sitting around for a pound of coffee.

월요병

The Korean word for blue Monday is 월요병 (weol-yo-byeong), which translates as Monday sickness. Me, I only have three classes on Monday and spend at least two hours asleep under my desk, so Monday is BFD as far as I'm concerned. But other people begin the week in need of a pick-me-up. Here's one:

Cough

Not a huge fan of the The Moth - partly because hipsters like it and mostly because I hate anything hipsters like - but tend to listen most weeks since I subscribed to their podcasts + have about five hours a week to pass on the subway. I wish they'd broadcast stories more compelling than just "Hey, it's Moby talking about his poor dog's fight with canine herpes!" but occasionally they actually do, like this week's that will rip your heart out. Go to their podcast page, listen to Anthony Griffith's story, and I guarantee you'll cry, especially if you have children. Homeboy's story is so moving it can extract empathy from a sociopath.

포파

The fun of ESL isn't so much teaching kids what to say but rather what not to say. Most often this means asking students what they're going to do over the weekend then informing them that they're both too old and too young to play with their friend, find a different word. Sometimes it means debriefing a round of Two Truths and Lie:

And then other times the students, too nervous to ask that I turn on the heat, will wear some coat their mothers bought for them last weekend at Dongdaemun:

Can't criticize homegirl too much considering I have a belt buckle that expresses the same thought, albeit less severely. Also, she sniffs glue.

Freelancing

I've been teaching myself Photoshop hahaha I mean uploading photos onto template sites. Call me if you need any work done. Here are a few pages from my portfolio:

My beautiful flower of a Melanie

My sister and her adorbz daughter, whom I affectionately refer to as my niece

Fred and Stef, so jeonsa they flew to Seoul on their cool rather than an actual plane

And Chithra, who is so pur-tay she looks airbrushed in person

Fabulous

The Fab 5 documentary was aired last week (and in perpetuity here), which was a fun way to relive the past on two different fronts: one, the storytelling that went along with the video highlights; and two, the way the establishment's reaction to this mirrored their initial reaction to the Fab 5 20 years ago. Whereas announcers and other talking heads used to project their racial biases onto the Fab 5's style of play and black socks, today they project those exact same biases onto the commentaries and recollections homeboys shared for this documentary. I mean, poor Jalen Rose, right? The most intriguing angle to this story was their antipathy toward Duke: the whole hood vs. prep, greaser vs. soc thing. Jalen spends a few moments explaining why he hated them at the time and two seconds later Grant Hill has written an op/ed for the New York Times impugning him for being critical of black men who come from two-parent households. Er, I suppose that's reasonable response if all you bothered to listen to was the first half of the statement ("Uncle Tom") and not the second ("I was an angry kid who was envious of him"). You can probably guess whom opinion's favored during this short back-and-forth. Sighs all around.

Eh, who cares. Really only mention because of course they make this documentary, a small controversy breaks out because of it, and now Michigan conveniently has to play Duke five hours from now in the NCAA tournament. My team will be the one wearing black socks, though not like anyone on the telly will bother to mention that.

Polio Teacher Is Died

Talked in class this week about how to ask for advice. Need to have a problem before you can seek someone else's two cents, so I asked the chilluns to generate their own list of issues, otherwise we'd be stuck with the book's examples (I'm often late for school... I didn't do well on my math test...) or mine (My cat ate my mother... My eyeball exploded...). One student's list:

- My dinosaur eat Polio teacher.
- Polio will be die tomorrow.
- My foot is kick Polio teacher.
- Polio's name is on death note.
- Polio wants to jump down on the airplane.

Along with his respective advice:

- You should just looking.
- You should just looking.
- You cut your foot.
- You should erase it. [Ed: Thank you.]
- You should push Polio on the airplane.

Homeboy isn't the best student but definitely one of the funnest. Think I've given him detention every single week since last March.

Student Election Reform

Not everyone has access to Photoshop, you know.

NCAA Basketblah

Had my after-school class fill out tourney brackets today.

Trying to enter them into someone's - ANYONE'S! - pool for feces and haha's just to see how they'd do against people who actually know where some of those schools are. In the meantime, I have them competing against each other for the ₩10,000 it'd cost me to fill out my own bracket. Haven't done that for nearly 10 years so figured I'd give one of them the dosh I'd lose if I did.

Slideshow Oh Hai

Finally went through the photos from my SE AZN duh-reeeeeeeeeeam holiday. I published some of them on jeonsa.com/jerms:

Thailand

Laos

Cambodia

Vietnam

Vietnam - specifically Phu Quoc - was the highlight of my trip, but I took my favorite photo at Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Well, Angkor Thom, but same same as far as this blog's tuk tuk driver was concerned.

I remembered how to spell Angkor by thinking of an angry Korean. You should go sometime.

Bucket List

Saw Angelique Kidjo tonight.

Get to cross her off the list of people from the continent I absolutely have to see before they die. I say before they die because Jackson Kaujeua, Lucky Dube, and Miriam Makeba used to be on my list but aren't breathing anymore. List:

Amadou and Mariam
Angelique Kidjo
Bongo
Cesaria Evora
Habib Koite
Issa Bagayogo
Oliver Mtukudzi
Orchestra Baobab
Salif Keita
Thomas Mapfumo
Youssou N'Dour

Doing pretty good considering when do any of them ever perform where I'm living? Guess I could have seen Orchestra Baobab when they came through Pdx a couple years ago but don't think I was obsessed yet. Otherwise, got to meet two of them - one while having a piss - and after tonight get to say I danced on stage with another. Working my way toward jeonsa.

Keeping Tabs, Hahahahaha

I just realized I have tabs on this blog but never use them. So okay, now I use them and have spent 30 minutes linking to all my Facebook albums in the Photos tab and to my fake new non-profit in the tab that now says GCE instead of Misc. If I used tags on this blog I'd file this post under Meta.

Korean Girls from America Don't Wear Makeup

Or so I [over]hear*.

Itsara

I didn't take this photo but I love her like I did:

This one is cuter though, at least until I began to think she resembled my little Filipino from back in the college day. Eh, just traveling through.

Have You Seen my Thailand?

Some Chiang Mai rando.

If you do find my Thailand then feel free to keep for yourself, though I would like Laos and Vietnam back. Not enough to sort through the nine million photos I took but maybe enough to bring a pad and paper and just draw everything next time.
